Looking for family adventure holidays with a difference? Head to the US, hire a car and hit the open road between Portland and Denver.

Family adventure holidays are fast becoming the holiday of choice for active families looking to enjoy something exciting and different during their precious leisure time. The world is definitely your oyster when it comes to family adventure holidays and one of the most popular options is to head off on a road trip. Road trips across America offer the opportunity for a diverse experience for both adults and children.

One tried and tested route is from Portland to Denver.

Portland, Oregon, to Denver, Colorado

A road trip is always best if you are able to get off the main routes and discover the more scenic options. Starting from Portland, leaving the main highway, you can visit Bridal Veil Falls State Park, which is definitely worth making the detour for. Along the gorge, children can look out for the colourful sails bobbing about on the Columbia River and further south you may be lucky enough, on a clear day, to spot Mount Hood.

Bonneville Lock and Dam is a great place to stop for a picnic and to stretch the legs. Seeing fish jumping up a ladder is quite a sight, and for kids who have never seen a fish hatchery, this is the ideal opportunity. As you travel further along the route you will approach Baker City and the Oregon Trail Interpretive Centre, which is an interesting place to visit if you want to get an insight into the wagon trains that led to the evolution of Oregon. You can even see evidence of the old wagon ruts, which remain as a stark reminder of the hardships the people that worked here had to endure all those years ago.

After another worthwhile detour on family adventure holidays to the region is to Hells Canyon National Recreation Area, which the children will love. From here, you can consider a few options for the continuation of your journey. You can head to Wyoming and visit Yellowstone National Park, Grand Tetons and Jackson Hole, or you may prefer to continue on to the Salt Lake City area to see the Dinosaur National Park in Colorado. Nevada is another option, where you will be able to see the old mining towns and incredible rock caverns and, in contrast, perhaps even visit a casino or two!

Yellowstone National Park is well known for its key features, such as the so-called Old Faithful. The geysers and thermals that spew water out of the ground are always a huge attraction to young children and there are more of these in this park than anywhere else in the world. Although Yellowstone may leave you believing you have seen the best of the best when it comes to national parks, a trip to Grand Teton might have you reconsidering. Every park is so completely different, and the lake and mountain scenery here is simply magical.

For children (or adults) who love a bit of adrenalin-fuelled fun, white water rafting in Jackson Hole will fit the bill. This popular activity on Snake River requires no experience – just a sense of adventure and a need for speed!
